Elder abuse is a tragic reality in nursing homes across Florida. Far too often, senior residents suffer through weeks or months – and in some cases years – of improper treatment at the hands of caregivers and staff. With our experience representing nursing home residents and their families, we know the consequences of this abuse first-hand. We understand that these are often sensitive situations, and we bring a caring, compassionate approach to helping victims and their loved ones seek the relief they need and deserve.

The Many Forms of Elder Abuse in Nursing Homes

We represent individuals and families in cases involving all forms of elder abuse. This includes:

Physical Abuse

Forms of physical abuse that occur in Florida nursing homes include hitting and pushing residents, use of physical restraints, and denying residents access to food or medications. Symptoms often include pain; anxiety, depression or emotional withdrawal; unexplained injuries; and fearfulness of caregivers or staff members.

Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse can involve unwanted sexual contact as well as sexual contact with residents who lack the mental capacity required to provide consent. Symptoms are often similar to those of physical injuries.

Emotional Abuse

Threats of physical or sexual abuse, threats to withhold food or medications, threats to deny visits with family, intimidation, harassment, beratement, humiliation and verbal attacks are all far-too-common examples of emotional abuse experienced in nursing homes.

Financial Abuse

Common forms of financial abuse targeting elders in nursing homes include check forgery, theft of cash and credit cards, fraud and exercising undue influence to cause residents to make payments, purchase gifts or modify their estate plans.

Negligent Care

Negligent care and abandonment  often result in severe physical and emotional trauma for elderly nursing home residents. This includes providing inadequate hydration or nutrition, medication errors, failing to provide treatment for injuries, ignoring residents’ needs and various other forms of inadequate care.

According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), as many as ten percent of seniors have experienced some form of elder abuse. If you suspect that an aging family member may be a victim of abuse in a Florida nursing home, we encourage you to seek legal help as soon as possible.
