Birth Control Drug, Yaz, Causes Gallbladder Disease

In March, yet another lawsuit against Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz, Yasmin, and Beyaz, was filed on behalf of local nursing student from Seminole County, Florida.

This young woman ingested a number of different birth control products without incident, but developed gallbladder disease as a result of her use of Yaz for nearly two years.

Thousands of girls and young women around the country have had to undergo cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal surgeries) as a result of their exposure to these dangerous birth control pills.

While gallbladder disease is common in women in their forties, it is somewhat unprecedented in younger women, which is why the drug is now being evaluated as the cause of these unusual injuries.  Yaz, Yasmin, and similar pills contain the progestin drospirenone, which is also prescribed to heart patients as a diuretic, and appears to predispose these women to the development of gallstones and other gallbladder dysfunction, necessitating surgery.
