Dangerous Side Effects from Osteoporosis Drugs
Unsafe drugs and health care products are especially insidious, because they kill rather than cure. Searcy Denney holds big drug companies accountable.
Consumers cannot always rely on the Food and Drug Administration – and certainly cannot rely on pharmaceutical companies – to tell them which pharmaceuticals are safe and which ones are likely to kill them. That’s because in the last few years, evidence of fraudulently-conducted tests, payoffs to researchers, misleading reporting and other unethical conduct have rocked the scientific world and killed or sickened thousands of Americans who rely on medications and health care products.
Whether the drug is Vioxx prescribed for severe pain, but instead caused heart attacks; a contaminated “miracle health food,” L-tryptophan, that caused a potentially-fatal autoimmune condition; or a health care product like Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with Moisture Loc contact lens cleaner, which has generated cases of a dangerous fungal infection that can cause blindness . . . pharmaceutical manufacturers not only endanger your health, they sometimes do it with full knowledge of the risk.
The attorneys at Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley know how these companies operate, and are applying their skill and experience to unsafe product cases that involve hundreds, even thousands, of innocent victims:
- Our law firm formed its own litigation group to handle cases of serious injury due to L-tryptophan, a nutritional supplement marketed as a miracle health food for insomnia, pain relief, obesity, and premenstrual syndrome. In 1989, the FDA pulled L-tryptophan from the market because of contamination that causes a potentially-fatal autoimmune disorder. More than 1500 Americans were sickened, and 27 were killed, by the contaminated batch. Searcy Denney attorney David Kelley represented 26 patients across the country, and after five years of litigation, successfully concluded the cases with confidential settlements.
- Searcy Denney was among the first to sound the alarm about Bausch & Lomb’s contact lens cleaner ReNu with MoistureLoc, which was recalled by the FDA because it was linked to a fungal eye infection called fusarium keratitis. Victims of fusarium keratitis face cornea scarring or even blindness. What’s more, ReNu appears to cause cornea staining that, in breaking the cornea’s protective layer, invites potentially-devastating corneal infections.
In the same old story of corporate negligence we have heard before, it turned out that Bausch & Lomb had known about the dangers of ReNu with MoistureLoc for at least nine years, and had been warned repeatedly by the FDA. Only after an outbreak of 39 cases of fusarium keratitis in Singapore, and a new alert from the FDA that cases of infection were increasing, did Bausch & Lomb pull their product from the market.
- Searcy Denney attorneys Cal Warriner and Brenda Fulmer of the firm’s Mass Tort Unit currently are looking into cases involving dangerous drugs that include bisphosphonates – an ingredient of some osteoporosis drugs that can cause unusual fractures of the thigh; Digitek, a generic version of Digoxin recalled because it doubled the dosage of this heart drug and put patients at risk of a heart attack; hormone replacement drugs that studies indicate can cause ovarian cancer, breast cancer, strokes, and heart attacks; Trasylol, aprotinin injections used to control blood loss in surgery, but which can cause kidney failure; and Yaz birth control pills that pose risks of cardiovascular complications such as blood clots, stroke, and heart attack.
